I haven't seen much written on the topic of cake stands. Are they out of style? Overlooked? Do you just rent one and not worry about it? From a little poking around, it seems that Martha has put a couple DIY cake stands out there and it seems rental companies and bakeries have them readily available to rent for $40-70. Buying one will run anywhere from $40-$400, but when will you ever need a cake stand again?

You know, from my experience of attending all my high school friends' weddings ... none of them used stands. They were all just flat on the table. I hadn't even thought about it.
