ahhhh, friday

I'm so glad Friday's here. I won't be doing any skating this weekend, but these are fun. And I will be having fun. Beach, berry picking, spending time with the brothers and possibly Six Flags. Only the weather will tell.

Enjoy your weekend!

Planning an eco wedding

DIY, locally grown, recycled, re purposed ... it takes a lot to pull of a truly low-impact, eco-friendly event. Here is a great article about one woman who pulled it off at sfgate.com.

There is a lot you could spend money on. Like this eco-friendly, custom wedding dress by Threadhead.

Bartering for your dream wedding

An inspiring story from The OC Register: "Kerry Coryell put off her wedding a decade ago when her mom got meningitis and she became her mom's full-time caretaker. Her mother since has passed away and the Laguna Niguel woman is using Craigslist to barter for the wedding she always wanted."

Wine box letter ceremony

Ben and I are going wine tasting as something different to do for my birthday this weekend. I'm so excited! In honor of this, I thought I'd re-post one of the most google-searched entries I've put on this blog. A little over a year ago I was planning my wedding and I considered putting this in our ceremony:

From June 16, 2008
There are a variety of little ceremonies couples incorporate into their weddings. You may have heard of the unity candle ceremony, or the sand ceremony and even the hand fasting ceremony. They are all very romantic and symbolize the couple coming together as one ... I just have a hard time with that concept. Blame it on my divorced parents or blame in on my natural skepticism, but I don't want to stop being me on my wedding day. And I don't think it is realistic to suggest that everything will be perfect from that day forward. I went searching for a ceremony that acknowledges the hard work and the dedication a marriage needs to survive. Here is what I came up with:
BOX, WINE, AND LETTER CEREMONY

(to the audience) XXXX and YYYY have chosen as a couple to perform a box, wine and love letter ceremony.

This box contains a bottle of wine, two glasses, and a love letter from each to the other. The letters describe the good qualities they find in one another, the reasons they fell in love, and their reasons for choosing to marry. The letters are sealed in individual envelopes and they have not seen what the other has written.

(to us) XXXX and YYYY should you ever find your marriage enduring serious hardships, you are to as a couple, open this box, sit and drink the wine together, then separate and read the letters you wrote to one another when you were united as a couple. By reading these love letters you will reflect upon the reasons you fell in love and chose to marry each other here today.

The hope is, however, that you will never have a reason to open this box. And if this is the case, you are to open this box to share and enjoy on your 10-year anniversary!

XXXX and YYYY, please seal the box.

(Personalized wine box is $28.99.)

Happy Friday!

My birthday is coming up ...

Pandas AND cmyk art?! I'll take one of these, thank you.

Via OMGPosters: "CMYK Projects have already launched their second print release (actually, watch for their third, a print by The Date Farmers, later this week). Studio Number One affiliate Philip Lumbang’s “CMYK Bears” set includes three 18″ x 24″ HPM’s (hand-painted multiples), has an edition of only 7, and is $275 shipped. Visit CMYKProjects.com."

1 dress, 365 days

I saw this the other day and am blown away! The Uniform Project is an amazing exercise in sustainable fashion as well as a fund raiser for the Akanksha Foundation.

Here's the idea:
"Starting May 2009, I have pledged to wear one dress for one year as an exercise in sustainable fashion. Here’s how it works: There are 7 identical dresses, one for each day of the week. Every day I will reinvent the dress with layers, accessories and all kinds of accouterments, the majority of which will be vintage, hand-made, or hand-me-down goodies. Think of it as wearing a daily uniform with enough creative license to make it look like I just crawled out of the Marquis de Sade's boudoir."

The Uniform Project is a new daily go-to site for me. They post the newest fashion daily!

Another sneak peek

We are 80% finished with these invitations, but I'm so excited about them that I had to post!

They are designed for Natalie, a very cool bride. The invitation pieces all have a blowing leaf motif for their fall wedding. The groom wanted blue, the bride liked the chocolate color, so we found a beautiful paper that is blue on one side and chocolate on the other. What a great match.

Aquathon Domination

I just wanted to share how proud I am of my friend Sara who just competed in her first aquathon (swimming, then running) and won her category! She has been living in Japan for the past 2 years and keeping a blog about the experience. Here is what she had to say:

"I had estimated that with my dislike for running, the open water swim, and the fact that this was my first attempt at an event of this type that my time would be somewhere around 30 minutes. I finished with a time of 23:48 and felt as though I had not run my best at all (since I didn't sprint and I wasn't very winded at the end). I wished I had run harder, but I was happy with my time considering everything.

"After the race was over there was a small awards ceremony. The overall top finishers got certificates and some sort of prize. After the three overall top male and female finishers were called they began calling out the numbers of the top three finishers in each age group. I heard my number called and was shocked! It had been so easy and I hadn't run my best so I didn't expect to get anything. I ended up being the top female finisher in my age group! I got a certificate with my name and time printed on it that says I was the top female in the 29 and under group."

Illustration innovation

I love that there are illustrators who are adapting to the world where things like Facebook and Twitter are king. This totally raises the bar on Facebook apps:

Screenshot of the MUGGMAKER Facebook app

"Hey everyone. As the print illustration market shrinks, I’ve been working to seek out new opportunities to meld my illustration and interactive design skills. I just launched MUGGMAKER, an animated avatar creator on Facebook. You can save your ‘Muggs’ and share them with friends, and save JPEGs for profile pictures. I’m excited to see what everyone makes with this! I’d love to hear your feedback. Thanks!" – Jon Keegan
