Oh no, Domino!

So sad!

I just read this post on Style Me Pretty:

"It’s my favorite magazine in the whole world. It’s the only thing that I EVER wait by the mailbox for, coffee cup in hand, knowing that the next hour is going to be heaven. It’s the reason that I love design, love all things beautiful (well one of the reasons, at least). And Domino Magazine is closing their doors. Goodbye, Domino. I love you forever and ever."

super day

I'm not a football fan (I blame my stint in sports at The Sun...), but who doesn't watch the Super Bowl? So, in honor of the upcoming game on Sunday, here's a look back at all of the past Super Bowl logos. Impressive.

The word on the street is there are some similarities between this year's Super Bowl XLIII logo and Bank of America's logo. Look similar to you? I think so. Interesting.

I'm a huge fan of Sophie Kinsella and have read all of her Shopaholic books (and the non-Shopaholic ones!) so I was more than thrilled when I heard that they're making a movie based on the books. Confessions of a Shopaholic comes out February 13th. Me and the hubby will be the first in line!

Since I don't know how to post video, you can check out the trailer here. Get excited!

emoticon or typo?

This story about the use of a possible emoticon found in a transcript of an 1862 speech given by President Lincoln ran in the New York Times the other day. The facts and analysis are quite interesting. Perhaps emoticons date back to 1862—Lincoln was a smarty!

Legend has it that Hemingway was once challenged to write a story in only six words. His response? “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” Based on Hemingway's notion, in 2006, SMITH Magazine started asking readers to send in their own six-word life memoirs. Life stories started piling in. They got everything from "Catholic school backfired. Sin is in!" to "The psychic said I'd be richer." They combined some of the memoirs into the book Not Quite What I Was Planning: Six-Word Memoirs by Writers Famous and Obscure.

Now, just in time for Valentine's Day, they've released a book on love: Six-Word Memoirs on Love & Heartbreak. The possibilities for these memoirs are endless. Some are sweet and some are so, so sad. Here's a sampling on love and heartbreak:

Love, much better in the movies.
Not always perfect. But so worthwhile.
First Christmas, gave me a toaster.
Waited for her to be legal.
Magnetic attraction fused two polar opposites.
I know you were the one.

These are amazing to read (you can do so on the website). Try coming up with your own memoirs on love—or just on life—and, if you're up to it, post it on the website for others to enjoy. If you're struggling with a Valentine's Day gift for that special someone, this could be the thing.

It's time to start thinking about Valentine's Day. I've been learning more and more about the wide world of chocolate. I think specialty chocolate has ruined Hersheys and M&Ms for me, forever. Here is a gorgeous illustration by Linn Olofsdotter for Divine Chocolate, a British fair trade chocolate brand.

Yum!

happy weekend!

If you liked the mustaches, you'll love these. The Curiosity Shoppe is one of the coolest, craftiest little shops around. Check out all of the amazingly bizarre and creative pieces they have to offer. I definitely need some of these googly eye hairclips. A peak around this shoppe is a fantastic start to the weekend!

2008 Review: Moustaches

One of my favorite little trends of 2008 was the Dali moustache. How can you help but smile at all the places these whiskers popped up?

1. Who do you feel like today? These mustache pencils are packed with personalities: irreverent Salvador (Dali), altruistic Zorro, caddish Burt (Reynolds), talented Django (Reinhardt), or charming Clark (Gable). Pick your pencil, or let your pencil pick you. $16. Rose and Radish

2. Little Angels Jewelry

3. Merino Moustache Gloves. Jack Spade

4. Moustach pint glass. Bread and Badger

And don't forget, there are just 121 days until the World Beard Championships.

For all the Coach lovers out there

Good news for you, bad news for Coach:

"In its 2010 fiscal year, which begins in June, the company plans to introduce more handbags in the $200 to $300 range. That would reduce overall prices 10 percent to 15 percent." Reuters reports. Read more here.

Sadly, I don't think that means they will give me a price break on the Sabrina bag that I have been stalking.

fun with boxes

I really want some huge box letters like these over at kylebean.co.uk. I'm sure they'd be easy (not EASY, easy, but doable) to make. They would look so good over a mantel. You could even paint them and make a centerpiece. The possibilities are endless. Consider this the ultimate monogram.

bored? look at books!

If you have time on your hands I recommend going to the website An Archive of Book Cover Designs and Designers. It's fun to browse. You can even search for books by title if there's a particular one you love. Have fun!

the thing about seating cards

Seating cards are those little things that tell guests where to sit. The only information they need to hold is the guest's name and table number. Seems simple, right? Simple, yes. But they don't have to be simple Simon. Even though they seem small and insignificant, try not to overlook them. They can make a huge impact and really add to the feeling of the wedding. They are essentially the first thing guests see and pick up at the reception. Instead of just laying them out on a table, put some thought into it. Something so easy to overlook could turn out to be a truly wonderful touch to your day.

beautiful brown

I always wanted a brown room (at some point back in the day I must have seen one on Trading Spaces) so when we bought our house almost three years ago I HAD to paint one room brown. Because of the flow of our house our bedroom was the best option. Since painting the room I haven't done much to it. I hung a shelf, brought in two bed-side tables and called it good while I tried to decorate the rest of the house. Lately I've been itching to create a pretty, romantic room that actually has furniture! I don't have the energy or time to repaint the room, so the design needs to work with the brown.

I'm thinking white wrought iron post bed sort of thing. And today I found a perfect addition to my brown walls over at Thuss Farrell Design. Their pattern designs are so lovely. Why, oh why can't they make wallpaper out of them? I'm making it my goal to make something like this happen to my brown walls. Even if it means breaking out the paint!

2008 Buzzwords

The New York Times presents the buzzwords of 2008, with nice typographic illustrations by Jessica Hische. Here is a little taste:

Caribou Barbie

A nickname for the former vice-presidential candidate Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska.

Obamanation

President-elect Barack Obama’s name continues to provoke an avalanche of one-offs and nonce terms, some of dubious utility and few of great lifespan. Variations on “Obamination” and “Obamanation” are common, with the first term largely being used in a negative sense and the second in a positive one. More were catalogued by the online magazine Slate, which created an application for Facebook and published a book of the terms called “Obamamania! The English Language, Barackafied.” A sample of other forms include Bamelot, Baraccoli, Baracked, Barackintosh, Baracklamation, Barackstar, Barackupied, Barackwurst, Nobama, Obamacam, Obamacize, Obamafy, Obamalicious, Obamalujah, Obamamatopoeia, Obamamentum, Obamanos, Obamaphoria, Obamarama, Obamascope, Obamatopia, Obamatose, Obamazon.

Frugalista

A person who is frugal but fashionable.

Staycation

A vacation from work or school that does not involve traveling.
